Network Operations and Software
The Department
of Mechanical Engineering operates a Windows 2000 Advanced Server
and Windows 2000 Pro based computer labs to support our students.
The Server is an Intel dual processor Pentium based Dell PowerEdge
configured to run RAID-5 drive array redundancy. This feature allows
for the complete failure/destruction of one physical drive without
the loss of any data, while at the same time providing the ability
to 'hot swap' the failed drive for a new one, without the loss of
network services. In addition, the server receives all of its power
through the APC Smart-UPS 1400 system, which filters the electrical
supply of spikes, surges, etc., and provides battery power in case
of brown-outs or complete power failure, thus enabling the server
to perform an emergency shutdown to prevent data loss. Once power
is restored, the Smart-UPS will automatically restart the server.
Student access to software and other network services is provided
in Labs located in ASEC 124, ASEC 125, ASEC 306 and ASEC 527. The
labs provide access to a number of high powered engineering software
packages including AutoCAD Mechanical Desktop, SDRC IDEAS 3D Modeling,
PTC Pro/Engineer, LabView, ALGOR, Working Model, Sigma Plot, MATLAB,
Mathcad Professional, Microsoft Visual Studio Professional, Borland
C++, Fortran, Visual Basic, and Microsoft Office 2000 Professional.
As always, software is constantly being updated to allow our students
to have an edge in keeping pace with Industry.
Management is the responsibility of Cliff Bailey technician for
the department. Mr. Bailey diligently works to maintain the computer
labs and provide electronic and computer services for the department.
